THE MOTION Picture Association (MPA), a US-based organization representing
top Hollywood studios, is set to introduce a rewards program aimed at
stamping out piracy in Asia, the group said.
The rewards program would be launched simultaneously in eight Asian
countries including the Philippines this week, the group said in a
statement.
The MPA currently operates anti-piracy programs in 13 countries in the
Asia Pacific region, according to the association's website.
It estimates that the US motion picture industry loses more than three
billion dollars every year from potential worldwide revenue due to piracy.

The MPA's DVD rewards program would establish telephone hotlines to
encourage people to report illegal operations in the Asia-Pacific region,
the group said.
The association said that the most predominant form of piracy threat in
the region is optical disc piracy.
"Millions of illegal optical discs are being produced in the region
and this pirated product is quickly spreading to other parts of the world.
In 2000, approximately 17 million pirate optical discs (predominantly
VCDs) were seized in this region alone. Recently, illegal DVDs have been
produced and distributed as well. The connection of organized crime to
pirate syndicates in this part of the world makes battling optical disc
piracy ever more difficult, and dangerous," the group said in its
website.
MPA said that "notable hubs" for optical disc piracy in the
region include Malaysia and Taiwan
